1st National Congress on Health Psychology

congr_nac_psi_saude.jpg      In 1994, psychologists interested in health psychology belonging to different organisations, with the support of the Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada and the Division of Clinical and Health Psychology of the Associação dos Psicólogos Portugueses, organised in Lisbon, from the 26th to the 28th of January, the “1st National Congress on Health Psychology”.

About 300 people participated in the congress with more than 90 presentations. Three invited speakers - Charles Spielberger from Univ. of South Florida-USA; Óscar Gonçalves from Universidade do Minho- Portugal; and Marie Jonsthon from St. Andrews University- Escócia, took part in the congress.

Congress organized under the responsibility of the SPPS

The 2nd Congress on Health Psychology was the first organized under the responsibility of the SPPS.

The SPPS defined some rules for the structure of the meetings:

1.     They will always take place at the end of Winter;

2.     They will be the forum were Portuguese Psychologists present and discuss the work they do in Portugal in the field of Health Psychology;

3.     They will include invited speakers: two from other European countries, one from another continent. Two leading Portuguese psychologists working in the field of Health Psychology and one medical doctor  working in collaboration with Health Psychology.

2nd National Congress in Health Psychology

2congresso.jpg    From February 27th to March 1st, 1997, the SPPS organised the “2º Congresso Nacional de Psicologia da Saúde” (2nd National Congress on Health Psychology). The first congress was held in Lisbon (south-centre of Portugal) and the second in Braga (North of Portugal). The main objectives of the congress were to establish the state of the art of the field in Portugal.

More than 400 people participated in the congress with more than 100 presentations. Six people from different fields and geographic areas participated as invited speakers with conferences that presented, critical connections for psychological interventions on health, the future of psychological intervention in oncology, the state of the art in health psychology, psychology and public health, and brain and behaviour - Cynthia Bellar President of the Health Psychology Division of the American Psychology Association, Marie Jonsthon from European Health Psychology Society, and Estrella Durá from Valência University- Spain, Isabel Leal from the Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada- Lisboa, Portugal, Teresa McIntyre from Universidade do Minho- Braga, Portugal, and Martins da Silva from The Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar- Porto, Portugal. Two workshops oriented by Cynthia Bellar and Marie Johnston were held the day before to the congress.

About 40 from the more than 100 presentations were edited in the “Actas do 2º Congresso Nacional de Psicologia da Saúde” (see in books), with more than 500 pages, which were distributed on the first day of the congress.

3nd National Congress in Health Psychology

3congresso.jpg    From February 23th to 25th, 1997, the SPPS organised the “3º Congresso Nacional de Psicologia da Saúde” (3nd National Congress in Health Psychology). The congress was held in the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. The main theme  of the congress was “Health Psychology and Chronic Diseases”.

More than 500 people participated in the congress with more than 170 presentations. Six people from different fields and geographic areas participated as invited speakers with the following conferences - João Justo, - Universidade de Lisboa (pregnancy in adolescence: chronic disease in remission?); Howard Leventhal from Rutgers University- USA (The self as it views and adapts to illness and health); John Weinman from London University – England (Stress recovering and wound healing: clinical and experimental studies); José Luis Ribeiro - Universidade do Porto (Health promotion or quality of life promotion with people suffering from chronic diseases); Machado Caetano - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas de Lisboa (Psychoneuroimunology: The immunologist point of view); Stan Maes - Leiden University-Holland (Towards an extended stress-coping model).
